COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

 

Noble International University’s Intensive English course builds on students’ previous education and language knowledge to introduce the English language and help students adjust to their new cultural environment. The course is designed to expand students’ abilities in listening, speaking, reading and writing for essential academic purposes. The students will develop necessary knowledge and skills through participating in activities that develop spoken and written English for a variety of purposes. They will be engaged in social interaction, reading and responding to short passages from fiction and non-fiction texts designed and adapted for intermediate learners of English. They will be working on a variety of forms and demonstrate an understanding of knowledge of and adaptation to Canadian Society through oral interaction.

 

The course has been divided into two sublevels with the instruction time of 125 hours each: 

Intensive English Level Two A (low intermediate level, 5 weeks)

Intensive English Level Two B (high intermediate level, 5 weeks).

Each of these levels consists of five-week periods and four components having equal weight in the Intensive English course and focusing on four language dimensions.

 

 

North Star” component (62.5 hours) consists of 10 thematic units that are organized in separate listening and speaking, and reading and writing parts. Each unit includes focused integrated skill practice to develop critical thinking and communicative competence which links the students to language outside of the classroom and encourages personal expression and critical thinking.

 

“Focus on Grammar” component (62.5 hours) helps the students to understand and practice English grammar to gain confidence in their ability to speak and write English accurately and fluently. Each unit presents a balanced approach with a variety of activities so that students of all different learning styles can benefit. 

 

“Ready to Write” component (62.5 hours) uses many ways to teach writing to English-language learners. In addition, each chapter includes a section on the mechanics of writing.

 

Reading component (62.5 hours) helps the students develop key reading strategies for decoding and comprehension of written texts through reading through reading outstanding short stories by American authors and a novel Detective Work. Focus will be on literature, improving reading, understanding literary elements, vocabulary, and developing greater individual and group communication skills.

“North Star” component: Units “Building a Better Community” and “Country Life or City Life?”

“Focus on Grammar” component: Simple Past and Past Progressive

“Ready to Write” component:  Writing personal and business letters 

Reading component: Reading a short American Story “A Secret for Two”

 

Week Three

Time: 25 hours

Description:

“North Star” component: Units “A Penny Saved is a Penny Earned” and “Making Money”

“Focus on Grammar” component: Present Perfect & Present Perfect Progressive

“Ready to Write” component:  Writing summaries

Reading component: Reading a short American story “Snake Dance”

 

Week Four

Time: 25 hours

Description:

“North Star” component: Units “Innocent or Guilty?” and “A Different Path to Justice”

“Focus on Grammar” component: Past Perfect & Past Perfect Progressive

“Ready to Write” component:  Understanding the writing process

Reading component: Project study: “Learn about Canada”

 

Week Five

Time: 25 hours

Description:

“North Star” component: Units “Etiquette” and “Subway Etiquette”

“Focus on Grammar” component: Future tenses

“Ready to Write” component:  Supporting the main idea

Reading component: Project study: “Learn about Canada”

 

 

INTENSIVE ENGLISH LEVEL TWO B (125 hours)

“North Star” component: Units “Who’s Game for These Games?” and “Serious Fun”

“Focus on Grammar” component: Modals and similar expressions

“Ready to Write” component:  Writing descriptions

Reading component: Novel study “Detective Work”

 

Week Seven

Time: 25 hours

Description:

“North Star” component: Units “Good-Mood Foods” and “The Best Produce There Is”

“Focus on Grammar” component: Past Modals

“Ready to Write” component:  Expressing an opinion

Reading component: Novel study “Detective Work”

 

Week Eight

Time: 25 hours

Description:

“North Star” component: Units “An Ice Place to Stay” and “I’ll Take the Train, Thanks”

“Focus on Grammar” component: The Passive 

“Ready to Write” component:  Writing a comparison paragraph

Reading component: Novel study “Detective Work”

 

Week Nine

Time: 25 hours

Description:

“North Star” component: Units “Staying Healthy” and “What’s Your Medicine?”

“Focus on Grammar” component: The Passive with modals

“Ready to Write” component:  Writing a contrast paragraph

“Ready to Write” component:  Writing assignment based on the novel

Reading component: Project Study “Make a Dust Cover of Your Favorite Book”

 

Level One Final Exam 

 

*Summative evaluation in the form of a writing assignment, test, or a project is given at the end of each week.
